Hire.Buy.Live.Newark

Newark is in the midst of revitalization, combining a historic surge in commercial and housing development and investment and technology deployment with the greatest reduction in crime in a generation. Yet, despite a thriving and expanding business community, Newark has high rates of poverty and unemployment with one-in-three residents living below the poverty level.
Rutgers University-Newark, in partnership with The City of Newark and other local anchor institutions, has launched the Hire.Buy.Live.Newark initiative to dramatically reduce poverty and unemployment and to strengthen the city's economy by the beginning of the next decade.

Three Strategies

This partnership relies on three integrated interrelated strategies: Hire Newark, Buy Newark and Live Newark.

  • Hire Newark will connect 2,020 of the city's unemployed to full-time living wage jobs by the year 2020, cutting the employment gap between Newark and New Jersey in half.
  • Buy Newark will support the growth of local businesses and match them to the purchasing needs of other Newark businesses, large and small, including the anchors, which are committed to increasing overall local procurement by 2020.
  • Live Newark will attract more employees, faculty and students to live in the city and will provide existing residents with additional rental and homeownership choices and incentives.

Your role in helping us achieve our Buy Newark goal

There is a comprehensive database of Newark businesses detailing the goods and services that these businesses provide.  It is encouraged that units consider these businesses when making purchasing decisions, when appropriate.
